The history of Espresso Royale dates back to the coffeehouses of North Beach, San Francisco and the early coffeehouses of Berkeley. The emphasis on great coffee and the ambiance of espresso bars in the early 80's sparked the interest of the company's president, a college student at the time. After traveling through Europe for 14 months, he helped open a coffee house in Davis, CA in 1984 and then in Santa Barbara, Seattle, Berkeley and Boulder.
The first Espresso Royale was opened in 1987 and more sprung up across the country in college towns such as Manhattan, Urbana, East Lansing, Minneapolis, Madison, Boston, Ann Arbor, Bloomington, Athens, Charlottesville, Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara.
The traditions of Italian cafes, and those early years in Berkeley set the style for Espresso Royale. The drink recipes, glassware, and counter setups trace back to the days of Peets, Cafe Roma and Caffe Trieste. The Espresso Royale house blend is unchanged since 1987 and its recipes have withstood the test of time. Espresso Royale has always been known for its friendly staff, unmatched drink quality and a service style that is casual and welcoming.
The company has continued to evolve with new store designs, products and customer services. Today we are developing cafes for more than just college students. We are taking our cafes on the road to better serve outlying areas, commuters and neighborhoods.
